The Assessors Role

The role of the Township Assessor is often misunderstood. As your Assessor, my job is not to set tax rates or increase your taxes; that responsibility lies with the taxing bodies listed on your property tax bill based on their budgets (levies). Instead, my primary duty is to:
  • Value Properties Accurately: Assess each property’s market value, considering factors like location, size, condition, and recent sales of comparable properties. This valuation is crucial for fair taxation.

  • Ensure Equity: I’m committed to making sure properties are assessed uniformly, so no one pays more or less than their fair share.

  • Debunking Myths: There’s a common misconception that assessors can arbitrarily raise property values to increase taxes. This isn’t the case. Assessments should reflect market value, and I aim to clarify this process, providing education to dispel such myths.
By knowing what the assessor does, we can team up to make property assessments helpful for fairness and growth in our town. I want to change how Richmond sees and deals with assessments, so we all work for a better, fairer, and smarter community.
Understanding Your Richmond Township Property Taxes.
Richmond Township is growing, which is great for our community.
Your property taxes fund important local services, based on the budgets (levies) set by different taxing bodies.

For a fair tax system, levy increases should be balanced with our population. If levies go up faster than our population, each homeowner may pay more. Importantly, even if home values and assessments go down overall, levies have generally continued to rise, meaning budgets haven’t typically seen reductions. This can result in homeowners paying the same or even higher taxes on a property that is valued less. This situation is not unique to Richmond Township or even Illinois; it’s a common dynamic in property taxation.

As your Township Assessor, I’m committed to fair and accurate property assessments to ensure the tax burden is shared equitably, no matter how the market changes. I aim to be transparent about how all these factors work together.
